The Chief Medical Officer’s Physical Activity Guidelines 2018 Update: Implementation, Insights and Implications – Dr Andy Pringle
StartMay 22
EndMay 22
The Chief Medical Officer’s Physical Activity Guidelines 2018 Update: Implementation, Insights and Implications – Dr Andy Pringle  The current UK physical activity guidelines were published by the Chief Medical Officers (CMOs) in 2011 and offer evidence-based recommendations for physical activity. In 2018 a decision was taken to review the guidance and provide updated practical public health guidelines and the development of potential implementation pathways for all groups, from healthcare to communication professionals.   During 2018, six Expert Working Groups (EWGs) worked with key national stakeholders to review the current guidelines and present new recommendations to the four UK CMOs based upon the latest scientific evidence. The EWGs were made up of UK and international experts in the field, covering four age ranges of UK physical activity guidelines (under 5s, children and young people aged 6 to 18, adults aged 19 to 64, and older adults aged 65 plus), plus new groups for sedentary behavior across the life course and Implementation and Surveillance.   Dr Andy Pringle was appointed to the Expert Working Group for Implementation and Surveillance.      This is the first time that a Leeds Beckett Academic has been appointed to this role and it is also the first time Implementation was included in the Review of the Physical Activity Guidelines.   The 2018 update is currently planned for publication in 2019, so the purpose of this seminar is to NOT to provide an overview of the updated recommendations for physical activity.  The aim of this seminar is to share the process by which the 2018 Review was undertaken, insights and reflections from the EWG for Implementation & Surveillance/the 2018 Review and to share some of the potential implications of the CMO Guidance for research, practice and our curriculum.  Further information on the 2018 update can be found here https://www.bristol.ac.uk/sps/research/projects/current/physical-activity/ : Chair: Dr Stephen Zwolinsky

StartMay 24
EndMay 24
Would you spend one hour to learn how to save a life? The signs of crisis are all around us. Do you know how to recognize them?  In this two-part training, you will learn the three simple steps anyone can use to help save a life from suicide. You'll walk away equipped to notice “pre-warning” signs and know how to take action steps before the issues become serious. MQC Program Director Kimberly Britt Petersen will kick off the training by teaching the QPR method—Question, Persuade and Refer—so that you can be empowered to make a positive difference in the life of someone you know.  Then Joannie DeBrito, LCSW will jump into the Alive to Thrive curriculum, the exhaustive suicide prevention resource developed by Focus on the Family. This curriculum is centered around building a strong foundation at home and preparing kids for healthy living. Ending Ageism? YES, WE CAN!
StartMay 28
EndMay 28
Have you, a friend, partner or family member experienced ageism? Have you caught yourself using ageist language, e.g., “I’m having a senior moment”? Do you get frustrated and angry by ageist stereotypes you see in the media, and the failure to recognize the strengths and talents that older people bring? If so, please join us for a fun and interactive workshop on this important topic and learn how we can all better address ageism when we see it. You’ll learn: What ageism is, and the harmful effects it has not only on older adults, but also on our communities and the economy What the general public believes about older people and about aging in America • Why telling a new story about aging and ageism is so important The benefits to all of us as we age of having positive views of aging How words and phrases in common use can have negative consequences that we don't intend because they reinforce ageist attitudes and prejudicial stereotypes about older people Language that we can use instead to advance a different story about aging and older people You'll leave with some concrete tips and tactics for using the new language and messages, and for addressing ageism, and sharing them with those around you. The workshop will be facilitated by Janine Vanderburg from Changing the Narrative in Colorado, a campaign to change the way people in our state think, talk and act about aging and ageism. Read more about us here: https://changingthenarrativeco.org/ If you or someone you know has experienced ageism, or if you simply want to know more about why this is important—you won’t want to miss this. Together, we can make a difference.
